Southern California Earthquake Center Earthquakes are the best known primary disaster hazard in southern California by the average citizen.  Many people who experienced the Northridge Earthquake in 1994 thought this was "The Big One."  They reason I survived it.  Unless they lived in the impacted areas, they thought “The Big One” was no big deal.  After all, on the day of the Northridge Earthquake one could drive 5 minutes away from Northridge and find business as usual.  These people are incorrect.  6.7 magnitude earthquakes are only moderate earthquakes.  We are long overdue for a major earthquake, magnitude 8.0.  An 8.0 will cause a fault break which is 20 longer than the Northridge earthquake.  The hazard from the real Big One is a matter of when, not if.  What we can do is mitigate and prepare for the real Big One.  To educate the public about earthquake preparedness, we are sponsoring a series of lectures.

Biography of Primary Speaker

Mark L. Benthien, Director for Communication, Education, and Outreach

Southern California Earthquake Center

University of Southern California

Mr. Benthien received a Bachelor of Science degree in Geophysics from the University of California Los Angeles in 1995, and a Master of Public Policy degree from the USC in 2003.  As director for SCEC's CEO program, Mr. Benthien communicates earthquake knowledge to end-users and the general public in order to increase earthquake awareness, reduce economic losses, and save lives.  To do this he 1) coordinates productive interactions among SCEC scientists and with partners in science, engineering, risk management, government, business, and education; 2) manages activities that increase earthquake knowledge and science literacy at all educational levels; 3) leads efforts to improve earthquake hazard and risk assessments; and 4) promotes earthquake preparedness, mitigation, and planning for response and recovery.
