Beverly Hills CERT Courses
Every now and then, Beverly Hills Fire Department will permit Los Angeles city residents in neighboring Fairfax District to attend Beverly Hill's weekend CERT courses if there is room. Many people find weekends easier for their schedule. Typically Beverly Hills meets their classes for 3 Wednesday nights and 3 Saturdays.
Beverly Hills CERT courses take 28 hours, as opposed to 17.5 hours when taught by LA Fire Dept. Beverly Hills includes a final exercise, and CPR and 1st aid in its classes, LAFD does not.
If room is available, Dr. Cheng can book space. Beverly Hills does not want LA residents calling them directly. If you are interested in this possibility, which does not occur often, let Dr. Cheng know so you can be put on a wait list. If you are able to get in it will be on last minute notice.
LA residents wishing to take Beverly Hill's CERT course, should know that they will graduate with a Beverly Hills CERT certificate. This certificate (you are encouraged to double check with LAFD CERT) has been recognized as valid and will enable you to attend LAFD CERT refresher and divisional trainings. Also Beverly Hills will not issue you a CERT helmet and vest, nor give you a Beverly Hills CERT backpack. You will have to buy these yourself for numerous vendors..
People who have not completed LAFD CERT courses, can not make-up modules in Beverly Hills.
La Cresenta CERT Courses
La Cresenta CERT is taught by certified civilian volunteer CERT instructors of the LA Sheriff's Dept. (LASD) supported by LA County Fire Dept. The majority of jurisdictions use a team of certified civilian CERT instructors supported by the local fire department. Dr. Cheng co-teaches for LA Cresenta. LAFD is the major exception. LAFD orignally developed CERT. Cribbing, a technique used to help dig out people trapped beneath rubble is taught in La Cresenta. LAFD shows a slide about cribbing. LA Cresenta does a final excercise. LAFD does not.
LA Cresenta CERT 1 courses are typically taught twice a year. The format is 2 Sats. and 2 Tue. and Wed. nights. Everyone over 18 is welcomed to come. However, only La Cresenta residents will be issues CERT helmets, vests and backpacks. Non-La Cresenta residents may purchase these items from any number of vendors.
People who have not completed LAFD CERT courses, can not make-up modules in Beverly Hills. People who have not finished other LA County CERT courses, may finish at La Cresenta.
