As Neighborhood Preparedness Ambassador, Cliff Cheng, PhD, KI6CM, CERT 2, T3, organized a free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) disaster preparedness course at Cheviot Recreation Center in the fall of 2006. The class was taught by Firefighter Kevin Mason of the Los Angeles (City) Fire Department. In the last two sessions, he was assisted by the newest member of the CERT Unit, Firefighter Sergio Mayorga.

The class was sponsored by the Neighborhood Emergency Radio Project www.NERP.myEweb.net, with co-sponsorship from: Cheviot Hills Homewowner's Assn., www.CheviotHills.org , Westside Neighborhood Council, www.wncla.org, Palms-Westside Village Neighborhood Watch.

The class had 58 persons in it.

The Instructor, Firefighter Kevin Mason gave the class an opportunity to do a table top triage exercise in the last class.  Most instructors do not do table top excercises.   

(Photo - left - The table top excercise.  In this scenario the class evaluated the RPMs [Respiration-Pulse-Mental Status] of a victim [which for this excercise was printed on a card attached to the victim].  and then made a triage decision as to what category to prioritize them into).

Our graduation speaker was Batallion Chief Ralph Rameriez.   Chief Rameriez spoke very positively about the expereinces he has had working with CERTs.  He thanked the class for taking the CERT course.  The class asked the Chief about the city's preparedness plans.  The Chief reassured the class that the city is ready for a major disaster.   The Chief finished by encouraging the class to learn CPR and first aid.
